Restored 1884 Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Piano | Brazilian Rosewood – Victorian

Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Pianos are the standard by which all other concert pianos are judged. This very rare and gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood Steinway & Sons Model D #52626 was built in 1884 at the New York Steinway Factory. This historic Victorian styled Steinway was one of the first 88 note ‘modern’ pianos ever built by the famed company. A culmination of Steinway’s piano design, the Model D continues to be the preferred choice of concert pianists around the world. This piano features a rare, figured Brazilian Rosewood cabinet that is sure to make it a centerpiece in any room it is placed in. Brazilian Rosewood is highly coveted today due to its beauty and extreme rarity. During the golden era of piano manufacturing, artisans had access to the very best supplies of this rich and exotic wood. The piano features detailed woodwork and carvings across the rosewood cabinet and the Flower Pot legs. The original ivory keytops have been retained and restored. A simply stunning instrument, this vintage Victorian Era concert grand piano has been completely restored and is a concert-ready instrument.

A Piece of History | Victorian Art Case Piano

Ordered by former Steinway & Sons dealer Lyon Potter & Company in Chicago, Illinois, this nine-foot Grand Piano was purchased as a gift to the then new, DuPage County Library.

Construction and fundraising issues delayed the delivery of the piano until 1891. In modern times the library building was converted into a museum. This is where the piano was found and rescued for restoration. When secured for restoration, the piano had actually been painted a metallic grey! Fortunately, the rare Brazilian Rosewood was preserved underneath. An identical model of this piano was used at the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in New York in 1891. Famed pianist Ignace Paderewski performed the opening night concert. This famous piano is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

New action parts have just been installed including new German Renner wippens and new hammers, shanks and flanges. The action has been regulated and voiced to ensure a responsive touch and a full, Steinway quality of tone. The piano has a warm voice that is more than capable of reaching into the far corners of great concert halls. The beautiful art case cabinet has been expertly refinished in a closed pore, hand rubbed semi-satin lacquer. Combining visual and acoustical perfection, this piano is one of the finest Restored Art Case Steinways we have available today. Our vintage Art Case pianos are rebuilt and restored with their performance as musical instruments foremost in mind. The sense of history, methodical craftsmanship and beauty of each Art Case Steinway is simply unmatched. Steinway and other historic piano makers labored to make each Art Case piano a signature piece,  worthy of their family name. Every wood veneer has its own special quality, every piano its own unique visual and acoustic voice. [See below for a short video/audio demonstration.]
