Steinway & Sons Model A3 Grand Piano | Ready to Restore Condition – African Flame Mahogany
Considered one of the finest scale designs ever produced by Steinway & Sons, the Model A-3 Grand Piano has become the preferred choice of numerous high-level pianists and technicians. Steinway Model A-3 #186423 was built in 1917 at the New York Steinway Factory. The A-3 design is the pinnacle of Steinway’s Parlor Grand development. Crafted only for a select number of years amid the ‘golden age’ of piano manufacturing, this instrument is in very good ‘ready to restore’ condition.
The Model A-3 was first made in 1913 and these instruments measure 6’4 1/2″ in length making them substantially larger than their Model A-1 or A-2 brethren. (The recently re-introduced Model A is the smaller 6’2″ Model A-2 design.) Extra length combined with an advanced scale design make these rare instruments highly prized and comparable to a larger Steinway Model B. Model A-3 #186423 features a modern styled square arm cabinet covered with a beautiful veneer of African Flame Mahogany. Richly and consistently figured, this wood is highly prized for its rarity and looks. The case rests on window pane, spade legs with nickel plated casters which match the rest of the piano’s nickel hardware.
This piano is in very good overall structural condition. The cabinet is solid and the Mahogany veneer is still well attached. The soundboard was repaired sometime in the past utilizing shims and the plate has been re-bronzed and lettered. The piano’s keyboard includes the original ivory keytops which are currently undergoing restoration. New genuine Steinway hammers were installed at one point in the past and our technicians have gone through the action performing regulation and voicing work to ensure a pleasant playing experience. Steinway Model A3 #186423 is in very good condition and could be purchased and played as it sits, however, we do recommend that rebuilding work is completed. When properly rebuilt this instrument will be of true, concert-level quality and responsiveness and will be suitable for the most advanced artists. Below is what a full restoration would entail;
