Steinway & Sons Model A-3 Grand Piano #268090 | Ebony – Ready to Restore

The Steinway Model A-3 Grand Piano is often nicknamed the ‘stretch A’ due to its larger size. Measuring in at 6′ 4 1/2″ in length, these pianos are substantially larger than their Model A-1 or A-2 brethren. The Steinway Model A was first introduced in 1878 and this Model A-3 is considered to the pinnacle of this piano’s design. These parlor grand pianos produce a sound full of power and they have a wonderful, wide tonal range. Out of all of the pianos built by Steinway, the A-3 is our favorite scale design. When properly rebuilt and regulated, these pianos are on par with even the best Steinway Model B Grands. A Composer’s Piano – Heinz Roemheld

Steinway Model A #268090 was built at the New York Steinway Factory in 1929 and has a rich history. Purchased and owned by film composer Heinz Roemheld, this piano served as his personal instrument. Roemheld was a prolific film composer who worked on hundreds of films both credited and uncredited. In 1942 Roemheld won the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score for his soundtrack for ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy.’ (Star James Cagney won the Oscar for Best Actor for the same picture.) Roemheld wrote score pieces for ‘Gone with the Wind’ and the soundtrack for the Orson Welles’ film ‘The Lady From Shanghai.’ One of his most enduring works was the song ‘Ruby’ from the 1952 picture ‘Ruby Gentry’ starring Jennifer Jones and Charlton Heston.

This Steinway Grand Piano was kept in the Roemheld family until it was purchased by us and includes a letter of authenticity that has been graciously provided by the family. This is an instrument with significant music and film provenance and will be a true concert level instrument once fully restored. In overall good condition, this piano is in need of restoration work. We recommend that you consider the restoration of both the piano’s action and the ‘belly.’ (Soundboard, pinblock, strings, etc.) The finish is presentable and refinishing is up to your preference. The Steinway A-3 is among our favorite scale designs due to its powerful bass and balanced overall tone. This piano is listed at $12,000.00. If you decide to purchase this piano and have us rebuild it, we will discount the purchase price of the piano to $8,975.00. The extensiveness of this piano rebuilding work can be tailored to fit your specific budget and needs and you may contact us for a rebuilding price quote.
