1894 Steinway & Sons Model C Semi-Concert Grand Piano | #81103

Steinway & Sons Model C Semi-Grand Pianos measure approx 7’5″ in length and are among the rarest of the larger Steinway Grand Pianos. Considered a ‘semi-concert grand, these instruments were first produced in New York between 1878 and 1905. These pianos continued to be produced in smaller, custom requested runs between 1906 and 1936 and they are still manufactured at the Hamburg Steinway Factory. Steinway Model C #81103 was crafted in 1894 at the New York Steinway Factory. This rare, Art Case instrument features a round arm cabinet design with double narrow moldings around the case. The cabinet is a rare Empire-style Art Case cabinet that paved the way for the modern-day Sketch 380 design that sets the standard for Steinway pianos to this day. At the time, the standard grand piano built by Steinway was in keeping with the late Victorian design sensibilities of the time. It is easy to imagine the impact this ‘modern’ style would have had when compared to standard pianos of its day! This Empire Steinway Model C is covered in a rich cut of African Flame Mahogany and has been expertly brought to life with a close pore, hand-rubbed satin ebony lacquer. This contrasts beautifully with the re-plated, original nickel hardware. This historic, vintage piano stands ready to sing the next part of its story.

The piano’s action has been fully rebuilt with the finest quality parts including new German Renner wippens and new natural felt hammers, shanks, and flanges. The piano features a new Kluge by Steinway keyset. Our piano technicians have completed extensive action and tone regulation to bring out a responsive touch and the iconic, New York Steinway tone. The original damper heads have been refinished and new damper felts have been installed. A new Renner Back Action has been installed and the pedal system has been fully restored. The massive cast iron plate, the backbone of the piano, has been expertly rebronzed. New premium German music wire and custom copper wound bass strings have been fitted to blued tuning pins that shine like jewels. These are driven into a new, custom-fitted hard maple pinblock. A new solid spruce soundboard has been installed for optimum stability and quality of tone.

The cast iron plate has been re-bronzed and the raised lettering has been carefully hand-detailed. This is an absolutely stunning vintage instrument and it will surely be the centerpiece of any room it is placed in. The Empire-style Art Case design is a rare and exciting part of Steinway company history. This angular, geometric design would pave the way for what people expect a modern grand piano to look like. The late 19th, early 20th centuries is the time that Steinway truly cemented itself as the world’s premier piano builder. Today, the Empire design is a true rarity. This piano is a true example of the golden age of piano craftsmanship and is an instrument of true, concert-level quality. The bold, commanding structure of this piano is matched by a powerful, Steinway quality of tone.
