1991 Mason & Hamlin Model BB Semi-Concert Grand Piano #90134 – Satin Ebony – Refurbished
Since 1854, Mason & Hamlin has represented the finest in American made musical instrument craftsmanship. Now based in Haverhill, MA, Mason & Hamlin continues the production of fine, concert level pianos. Mason & Hamlin Model BB #90134 was built in 1991 during the company’s notable quality resurgence of the 1990s. (During this specific era of ownership, the company produced an almost bespoke number of pianos numbering under 600 in total quantity!) Measuring 6′ 11 1/2″ in length, this semi-concert grand piano has been expertly refurbished and regulated by the team here at Chupp’s Piano Service, Inc. The solid brass hardware has been polished, restored, and now contrasts dramatically against the satin ebony finish, which has been carefully repaired and hand rubbed to bring it back to life.
The piano’s action features all German Renner parts (including Renner Premium Blue hammers). The German Kluge Klaviaturen keyset is another example of the top-notch focus on quality that was being brought back into the Mason & Hamlin instruments during this time. Our expert piano technicians have fully regulated and voiced this piano to bring out the deep, powerful quality of tone expected of a Mason & Hamlin.
This Mason & Hamlin BB features a full, warm quality of tone with a bass section that hits you right in the chest. The action is light with a good level of control making it a joy to play. Like other pianos built by Mason & Hamlin, this instrument includes several features that contribute to its powerful sound and lasting durability. The full perimeter cast iron plate spans from each side of the cabinet ensuring the highest level of stability. The Tension Resonator underneath the piano locks the uncommonly thick hard rock maple rim into its permanent shape which helps the soundboard retain its crown. Compared to the similar Steinway & Sons Model B, Mason & Hamlin BB Grands measure approx. four inches wider which allows for a larger soundboard area. Due to their powerful bass and singing treble sections, many Mason & Hamlin pianos sound larger than their actual size and being ‘overbuilt’ allows them to perform well under consistent use. A properly prepped Mason can easily go toe to toe with similar Steinway & Sons instruments at a reasonable price point. Which one will you prefer? Comparing them in person here at Chupp’s Pianos is the only way to find out!
